The Animal Genome Size Database is an important academic resource that brings together genomic information for a large and growing number of animal species. The creator of this data set Dr. T. Ryan Gregory, spent a great deal of time scouring literature and completing experiments to establish this information and the brief for the site was to make the information as easy to access and use as possible.
All of the data was converted to MySQL tables and a robust search tool was established to allow users to easily select any subset of the data that they wanted. The data is shown in a table which has a nice drag and drop feature that allows choices to be made about what columns are selected for display.
A host of features were also added to enhance the user experience, such as a data download to Excel , some AJAX touches to the dropdowns in the search tool and up to the minute statistical analysis of the information in the database.
A full featured custom CMS was also added so that the Dr Gregory and his team could manage the entries in the database and add to a news feed to the front page.
